Risks exist as follows:
- At signals:
- parallel traffic turning right into the crosswalk;
- parallel traffic turning left into the crosswalk;
- perpendicular traffic turning right-on-red across the crosswalk;
- perpendicular traffic running the red light.
These are covered in detail in the Risks section of the "Self-Study Guide: Crossing at Modern Traffic Signals."
At uncontrolled crossings:
- if intending to cross during a gap in traffic and
- you are able
to hear/see all traffic with enough warning to know when it's clear to cross, the risk is ...
... negligible;
- you are at a Situation of Uncertainty for gap judgment, there are risks that ...
... as you start to cross, undetected vehicles are approaching that
can reach you during the crossing
(click here for considerations to determine level of risk).
- if intending to rely on drivers to see and avoid you, there are risks that ...
... drivers will fail to stop or yield
(click here for considerations to determine level of risk).
At two-way stop signs (crossing the street with the stop sign):
- parallel traffic turning left or right into the crosswalk;
- perpendicular traffic approaching or waiting at stop sign; and
- traffic from the stop sign across the street.
At four-way stop signs:
- there are risks from
-
stopped cars that surge forward and cross your path from any direction;
- if intending to cross when no traffic is present, there are risks from idling vehicles that you can't hear or see.
NOTE: For people who are unable to see or hear the traffic, assistance is needed to gather information needed to evaluate the situation.
